5th Annual Oyster Cook-off just around the corner

The start of the 5th Annual Oyster Cook-off fundraiser to benefit the All-Volunteer Apalachicola Fire Department scheduled for Jan. 16 and 17 is just seven days away.  The annual cook-off is the sole fundraiser for the Fire Department and the vision of local resident and event organizer Marisa Getter.

The cook-off attracts area chefs and homegrown locals competing with their prized oyster based recipes. Last year’s first place winner the Eastpoint Volunteer Fire Department will be back this year to defend their title. The event is in its fifth year and is held on the Friday and Saturday before Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Holiday in historic downtown Apalachicola at beautiful Riverfront Park.

The event will include a silent art auction from 6:00pm-8:00pm Friday, Jan. 16 at the Apalachicola Center for History, Culture and Arts at 86 Water Street. Saturday’s festivities will be from 12:00pm-5:00pm with judging of contestants’ oyster dishes, children’s activities and live blues music by the Eric Culberson Band. Several types of seafood will be offered for sale such as fried, baked, and raw oysters, oyster stew, smoked mullet, fresh shrimp and more!

“I invite everyone to enter their favorite oyster recipe or just come to enjoy some fresh Apalachicola Bay seafood, live music and small town camaraderie”, said Getter.

The event is also in need of volunteers to help out during the big day on Saturday. There are plenty of jobs available from setting up and breaking down tents and tables to cooking and tidying up the park

If you can volunteer and would like to sign up online you can do so by clicking HERE to reach a sign-in portal with a list of jobs where help is needed. Sign up will only takes a few minute.
