Important Information About Your Drinking Water

TO: The City of Apalachicola Water System Customers

The City of Apalachicola’s Well #6 raw water tested positive for a fecal indicator (E. coli.) on February 1, 2011. As customers, you have a right to know what happened and what we are doing to correct this situation.

What should I do?
There is no need to boil water for consumption. Samples that were taken within the distribution system on the same day have shown no signs of total coliform or E. coli.
As a precaution to ensure you continue to receive safe drinking water, the suspected well has been taken offline until follow up samples have been cleared.

What does this mean?
Fecal indicators are microbes whose presence indicates that the water may be contaminated with human or animal wastes. Microbes in these wastes can cause short term health effects, such as diarrhea, cramps, nausea, headaches, or other symptoms. They may pose a special health risk for infants, young children, some of the elderly, and people with severely compromised immune systems.

What is being done?
Well #6 has been taken offline and will not be put back into service until all samples are clear. Repeat sampling is underway and an evaluation of the well is being performed. The City of Apalachicola will take all steps and procedures necessary to continue providing its citizens with safe drinking water.
