Today, April 22 marks the 40th anniversary of Earth Day, with members of the Apalachicola City Square Community Garden kicking off the celebration at 5:30PM at the garden site located at the corner of Avenue F and 8th Street.The celebration will feature a number of young children from the Bring Me a Book Franklin Reading Program along with a display of several handcrafted compost bins. Several community gardeners will be on hand to explain the purpose and use of the composters.
Responding to widespread environmental degradation, Gaylord Nelson, a United States Senator from Wisconsin, called for an environmental teach-in, or Earth Day, to be held on April 22, 1970. Over 20 million people participated that year, and more than 500 million people and several national governments in 175 countries now observe Earth Day on April 22 each year.
This local event marks the second straight year that members of the City Square Community Garden have held an Earth Day celebration in the Historic City of Apalachicola.
In 2009, amidst a serene backdrop, a diverse group of Apalachicola residents took part in the celebration while area clergymen ask for divine blessings upon the works of the newly established garden.
This year’s event will also feature a couple of guitar students providing musical entertainment while refreshments are served.
