On the recommendation of City Administrator Betty Webb, the Apalachicola Board of City Commissioners unanimously voted Tuesday night to bring their public works operation under one umbrella and appoint a new head to oversee the consolidated departments.
The commission named longtime city employee Greg Harris, who was the city’s lead heavy equipment operator in the Street Department, to the new position of Public Works Superintendent.
Harris started with the city in 1984 and worked at various jobs within different city departments before settling in the Street Department where he grew into a standout heavy equipment operator.
To assist Harris, Webb recommended the appointment of Robert Osburn to the position of Public Works Operations Manager. Osburn previously held the title of Public Works Foreman.
The merger follows the March retirement of longtime city employee Marvin Croom, who headed up the Street Department.
