After a closed door meeting with Florida Governor Charlie Crist, British Petroleum (BP) Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Tony Hayward announced that, BP would spend $25 million on Florida advertising campaign.
This marks the second $25 million grant the company has allocated to Florida since the Deepwater Horizon oil platform exploded and started fouling the Gulf of Mexico and its tributaries with over 200,000 gallons of crude oil per day.
State officials have been calling for an advertising campaign funded by BP as Florida’s coastal communities head into their 90-day tourist season. Despite the oil plume still 70 miles from Florida's nearest beachfront community in Pensacola, business owners in the Panhandle have already reported losses in the millions as tourist cancel reservations or wait to schedule their trips.
BP is also giving $15 million to Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana.
