Friday Morning Voluntary Evacuation Ordered for Outskirts of City

A small leak around the base of one of the chlorine gas cylinders at the Apalachicola Water Treatment Plant was the cause of a temporary precautionary voluntary evacuation order issued Friday morning January 15 for residents living around the treatment plant located west of the city limits.

The leak was noticed by plant operators Friday morning and was reported to City and local emergency officials who in turn notified State Emergency officials who sent a hazmat team down from the Tallahassee Fire Department to secure and contain the cylinder for removal.

In an abundance of caution, the Apalachicola Volunteer Fire Department issued a temporary voluntary evacuation of the area Friday morning. According to Fire Department and City officials, the leak was minimal and did not result in any contamination to the surrounding area or represent a health hazard to residents. The evacuation notice was lifted by 1:30 p.m.
