Concert served to take people’s minds off BP oil spill

The well-attended open-air concert over the Memorial Day weekend at Apalachicola’s Riverfront Park served as a relaxer, if for only a moment, took those in attendance minds away from the oil spill that’s troubling the Gulf of Mexico.

Before the start of the May 29 event, visitors to the area quickly discovered that the only oil found in Apalachicola, was inside the deep fryers at area restaurants preparing freshly caught seafood harvested from the pristine waters off Apalachicola.

Both visitors and residents alike gathered to relax their bodies and minds long enough to enjoy the concert against a nighttime setting of newly refurbished docks, a renovated park, and shrimp boats.

The concert sponsored by the Franklin’s Promise Coalition in collaboration with several other agencies was the first of several series of outdoor performances scheduled for the summer with proceeds from Saturday’s event going to benefit the BAY AID Franklin Disaster Relief Fund.

The other concert partners include the City of Apalachicola, Franklin County Tourist Development Council, Franklin County Parks & Recreation Department, and Oyster Radio News Station.

Those in attendance strolled in and out Riverfront Park, as Crooked Shooz a high-energy five-piece rhythm and blues band belted out old-school tunes to the delight of the crowd.

The next scheduled concert in a series of three, is on July 3, with proceeds from that event going toward support of the Apalachicola Volunteer Fire Department.
