Geocaching comes to Historic Apalachicola

The fast growing global gaming activity called geocaching has made its way to the historic City of Apalachicola.

Geocaching is a high-tech treasure hunting game similar to hide and seek that’s played throughout the world by adventure seekers equipped with Global Positioning System (GPS) devices.

The game is played by hiding containers called geocaches, outdoors for others to find and then sharing the experience online. The game is enjoyed by people from all age groups, with a strong sense of community and support for the environment.

The new sport currently has 1,025,703 active caches and an estimated 3-4 million participants worldwide.

The first official geocache was hidden in the state of Oregon right after the U.S. government removed the requirement “Selective Availability” in 2000 dealing with private access to GPS technology.

The move by the government in effect lifted the restrictions on satellites and allowed the GPS user to find locations within a few feet. A geo (earth) cache (hidden place) is a container that is hidden out of plain sight. It is not buried like a treasure chest, but it is sometimes concealed, such as being covered with leaves or rocks or hidden in some other way to camouflage the container.

The geocache can be as small as a film container or as large as an old ammunition box found at an Army-Navy surplus store. There are also official waterproof geocache containers available for sale that is always clearly marked to denote them as official geocache containers, indicating to the finder not to disturb.

Denise Kleiner, who is a devoted geocacher, was on her way home from a two-month road trip traveling around the state writing a book titled “Explore Florida with Geocaching”, when she decided to lay over in Apalachicola for a few weeks.

While in Apalachicola, Kleiner realized like so many others ultimately do just how special and important the place really is. So she decided that with the historic and natural beauty of the area Apalachicola would be a great place for geocaching.

With that, Kleiner requested a partnership with the city to strategically locate a geocache within the community.

Named “Apalachicola Star” the coordinates of the geocache located within city are N 29° 43.407 W 084° 58.896. The container is situated in a location that will allow the avid geocache seekers the opportunity to see the historical aspects of the community.

The sport draws people from every walk of life and from every location on earth. It gives the finder a sense of excitement associated with the unknown and, of course, the thrill of a find. This is a contagious new sport or hobby as some view it, that anyone can enjoy. It can take players to places they may not have visited or ever thought they would visit.
