McCoy Selected Chair

Rose E. McCoy was selected to head the new Apalachicola Citizens Budget Committee. At their first official meeting held August 4, budget committee members unanimously agreed to have Ms. McCoy serve as Chair of the group. She previously served the Apalachicola community from 1988-1993 as City Commissioner over the finance department. She is a local business owner and operator of M&M Monument, a retired schoolteacher and principal over Chapman Elementary School.

Other committee members include the current finance commissioner Frank Cook, Jim Philyaw, Rita Sawyer, and Dick Dosik.

The committee will now meet again on August 11, just one day prior to the City Commission holding its first budget workshop.

Glad to see the city finally asked for help from knowledgeable citizens. Just some thoughts...On the boat basin fees-those prices are great for citizens. Out of towners should pay market rate, which is much, much higher. Any raises in this economy would put a strain on any for profit enterprise. Any raises should be merit raises. Golf cart owners should be given rewards for not polluting and for causing less wear and tear on our streets. Do away with the building dept and contract what little need we have to the county. Increase occupational licenses by 25% only if you increase city services by 25%. Out here in the real world, if we are expecting a shortfall in the neighborhood of $122,00, we would look first at how much staff we could eliminate and how many other expenses we could reduce--not just raise prices. Then again, we don't have the authority to tax!

    Thanks, Jerry
