Second Resource Fair today in Eastpoint

There will be another Resource Fair held today, October 3, 2012, from 9:00AM to 5:00PM EST at the Eastpoint Fire House.

The Resource Fair is a collaboration of local, state, and federal agencies along with nonprofit organizations gathered in one place to provide pertinent information and assistance to those affected by the collapse of the Apalachicola Bay Oyster Industry. 

At an initial Resource Fair held at the same Eastpoint location on September 14, over 500 displaced seafood workers received information ranging from getting a G.E.D., job retraining, to help with filling out applications for public assistance.  

There’s a prevailing thought among the seafood workers, that the collapse of the oyster industry is directly related to the reduction of freshwater flow by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers down the Apalachicola-Chattahoochee-Flint (ACF) River system.  Resulting in high salinity in Apalachicola Bay, which is detrimental to oysters.

A high-level official from state government is expected to be on hand around 1:00PM EST today to address the displaced workers and offer the states perspective.
