Domestic Violence Awareness Month in Apalachicola

In recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, the Refuge House along with their community partners has scheduled an event to raise local awareness concerning domestic violence a problem that often happens behind closed doors in Franklin County.

Open to the public, the organizations have scheduled the event for Friday, October 12, 2012, from 4:00PM to 7:00PM at Battery Park, also known as the “Ten Foot Hole” in Historic Apalachicola, Florida.

Domestic Violence Awareness Month got its start as the first Day of Unity in October 1981, which at that time served to connect battered women advocates across the nation that were working to end violence against women and their children.  The Day of Unity soon became a special week and in October 1987, saw the observance of the first Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

Domestic violence crosses all ethnic and socioeconomic lines and occurs all too often when an intimate partner uses physical force, sexual, psychological, or economic abuse against his or her partner.

At their regular scheduled October 3, 2012, meeting, the Apalachicola Board of City Commissioners adopted Resolution 2012-05, which calls for the recognition of October 2012 as Domestic Violence Awareness Month throughout the Apalachicola community.
