The City of Apalachicola Youth Center was abuzz with a new and exciting activity this past Sunday when a dozen or so youth from the area flocked to the Center to participate in the first ever series of “Drumming Circles” lead by drumming expert Mershell Sherman.
The experience was part of the Weems Arts in Medicine program, which goal is to engage the youth in Arts activities as a way to improve communication and team building skills. In addition, according to leading researchers, drumming circles alleviates self-centeredness, isolation, and alienation, as well as create a sense of connectedness with self and others.
According to youth center volunteer coordinator Sunny Dunaway, although the drumming circle is a new experience for the youth, the event was great, well received and enjoyed by all. “I think the kids really enjoyed it and I can see how we can make the next session even better”, said Dunaway.
Operated in partnership between the City of Apalachicola and the Franklin’s Promise Coalition, the Youth Center opened its doors in 2010 with a mission of providing a safe and healthy environment for the youth of Apalachicola.
The Center is open Saturday from 2:00 PM - 8:00 PM, Sunday from 3:00 PM - 8:00 PM and Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday from 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM and is located in the gymnasium as part of the Mayor Van W. Johnson, Sr., Recreation and Community Service Complex.
