Mayoral Proclamation declaring November 30th "Small Business Saturday" in Historic Apalachicola

MAYORAL PROCLAMATION

A Mayoral Proclamation proclaiming November 30, 2013, as “Small Business Saturday” throughout the Historic City of Apalachicola, Florida and supporting efforts to increase awareness of the value of locally independent-owned small businesses:

WHEREAS, the Apalachicola Board of City Commissioners and its dedicated staff recognizes the importance of locally independent-owned small businesses as the backbone of our local economy and the very fabric that holds this community together; and

WHEREAS, one of Apalachicola’s many attributes is its unique array of locally owned and operated independent businesses housed within historic structures, which are part of the tradition and heritage of this distinctive community; and    

WHEREAS, according to the United States Small Business Administration, independent-owned small businesses generate 60 to 80 percent of all new jobs annually; and

WHEREAS, for every $100 spent with locally owned, independent businesses, $68 returns to the community through local taxes, payroll, and other expenditures; and

WHEREAS, the elected leadership of the City of Apalachicola supports our local businesses that create jobs, donate to local causes, boost our local economy and preserve our neighborhoods; and

WHEREAS, each dollar that stays in Apalachicola is spent three to four times more over in Apalachicola to help build up the local infrastructure, pay local property taxes, and fund local police and fire protection; and

WHEREAS, the support of these businesses is critical to maintaining a vibrant, compact, and socially, environmentally and financially sustainable community; and

WHEREAS, our locally independent-owned small businesses have so much to offer not only to holiday shoppers, but also to year round shoppers.

THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED THAT I, Van W. Johnson, Sr., Mayor of the Historic City of Apalachicola, Florida, by the power and authority vested in me by the City Charter and the laws of the State of Florida do here proclaim November 30, 2013, as “Small Business Saturday” in Apalachicola, and encourage all residents to support local businesses by shopping locally on November 30th and throughout the year.
