The students enrolled in the City of Apalachicola Project Impact Program is scheduled to launch the first wooden boat built by their very own hands while under the tutelage of boatbuilders employed at the Apalachicola Maritime Museum.
The launching will be held at 3:00PM tomorrow, October 25th on beautiful St. George Island at the end of the bridge (across the street from Harry A's). "The kids have worked so hard and they are so very proud of their boat... this will be their first time to take a ride in their own creation", said Project Impact Director Faye Johnson.
The boat building program is a collaborative effort between the Apalachicola Maritime Museum and the City of Apalachicola Project Impact Afterschool and Summer Enrichment Program. The collaboration has been recognized as a "Spotlight" program by the Florida Department of Education 21st Century Learning Centers Program.
Early this month, Johnson and members of her staff presented the boatbuilding program at the 2013 Afterschool Alliance Conference where it was received with rave reviews.
A pizza party will follow the launching and paddling around at BJ's Pizza on St. George Island. The public is invited to come out and support this great effort and milestone in the lives of the students at Project Impact.
