Today I issued the following Mayoral Proclamation
commemorating the 50th Anniversary of the historic August 28, 1963, March on
Washington where Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., delivered his now famous "I
Have a Dream" speech on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial.

Dr. Martin Luther King
Jr., “I
Have a Dream” Speech
WHEREAS,
50th years ago today, a young preacher named Martin stood on the
steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C., and delivered a message to
the social conscience of America, and
WHEREAS,
that message resonated and admonished America for not living up to the
endearing tenets of liberty and justice, guaranteed rights established in the
constitution for all men, and
WHEREAS,
that moment in time, ushered in a movement that transformed the spiritual and
social consciousness of this great nation, and
WHEREAS,
America, the great melting pot, the envy of all nations, is at its best when
it’s diverse and all inclusive.
NOW THEREFORE BE IT
PROCLAIMED that I, Van W. Johnson, Sr., Mayor of the
Great City of Apalachicola, do hereby proclaim and encourage the people of
Apalachicola and the surrounding areas to reflect upon what the Civil Rights
Movement has meant for the country, the State of Florida and the City of
Apalachicola as we commemorate the 50th Anniversary of this
momentous occasion.

virtue of the authority vested in me by the City Charter and the laws of the
State of Florida, I have hereunto set my hand this 28th day of
