Passing the torch

City commissioners, staff, fire fighters, and friends gathered to bid farewell to outgoing Fire Chief Bert Simmons at a retirement dinner held in recognition of his service to the city Monday night Aug 31, at city hall.

In jest, Ginger Creamer one of two captains within the fire department presented Simmons with a miniature toy fire station and ladder truck and stated, “Chief this is something that you always wanted from the city”.

While standing alongside Simmons, new fire Chief George Watkins recounted the progress the fire brigade made under Simmons leadership before handing him a card signed by both city officials and fire fighters.

After being presented with a plaque from the city an emotional Simmons thanked everyone for their support and friendship, then reminisced about his role in bringing about change within the department.
