The long anticipated repairs to the section of sidewalk that run alongside the dock at Riverfront Park was completed in time for last weekend's Independent Film Festival held inside the scenic downtown park.
Wave action from Tropical Storm Debby that hit the Florida Panhandle during late June 2012, caused the soil underneath the sidewalk to wash away. Undermined by the erosion the sidewalk collapsed and was rendered unsafe for public use.
Because the storm damage was related to a federally declared disaster, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) picked up the tab and awarded the city $320,000 to make the necessary repairs. The project was engineered by the city's engineering firms, Preble Rish and constructed by local contractor William Poloronis of Poloronis Construction.
Since the park was upgraded with a flowing water fountain in 2009, it has become the center of community related activities in Historic Downtown Apalachicola. The park has played host to several outdoor festivals and events, which include a series of summer concerts, weddings, the Independence Day firework display, the Annual Antique Classic Boat Show and the Annual Oyster Cook-off just to name a few.
The park is now complimented by a newly constructed public restroom facility located directly across the street.
