UF Students Begins Work on Garden for Seniors

The anticipated work to construct a garden adjacent to the City of Apalachicola’s newly renovated Historic Holy Family Senior Citizen Community Center located at the corner of Avenue K and Dr. Frederick S. Humphries Street has commenced.

 

 

An interdisciplinary team of faculty, students, and healthcare professionals from the University of Florida Center for Arts in Medicine, along with Jason White Construction Company are busy building the garden designed by Sandra Murphy-Pak that's destined to become a gorgeous outdoor setting where our seniors can gather and work at their leisure while interacting socially.

 

 

Led by Dr. Jill Sonke, each year over spring break members of this learning service-program spend one week in the county addressing healthcare needs, working on community development projects, and conducting health screenings. The project engages the arts to address the needs of the Franklin County community, particularly those who work in the local seafood industry.

 

The 2013 county project, which began Sunday, March 3rd and will end Saturday, March 9th will focus on continuation of the Theatre for Health Education project at the Franklin County Consolidated School as well as the development of the Holy Family garden.
