Yesterday marked the
third year under the direction of Faye Johnson and her wonderful staff that the City of Apalachicola's
Project Impact afterschool and summer enrichment program has organized and
participated in the celebration of Read Across America.
Read Across America is
a nationally recognized Day, a project of the National Education Association that's
acknowledged and celebrated through the issuance of a presidential proclamation
on March 1 of each year.
The event is a reading
motivation and awareness campaign that calls for every child in every community
to celebrate reading on or near March 2, the actual birthday of beloved
children's author Theodor Seuss Geisel - better known as Dr. Seuss.
Here in Apalachicola
kids from Project Impact travelled across the city to meet with local
government officials, both in their offices and outdoors at Battery Park where
their imaginations were ignited through the act of reading.
As mayor of Apalachicola,
I was honored by the opportunity afforded me to help celebrate this year’s
event. As a result, I too met in my
office with kids from Project Impact where they listened attentively while I read,
“The Thinga-ma-jigger Is Coming Today” a children's book authored by Tish Rabe.
When all was said and
done, we all had a ball, both large and small, because… “You’re never too old,
too wacky, too wild, to pick up a book and read to a child.”
