Supporting Israel
Senator Nelson was an original cosponsor of S.Res.599, a bipartisan resolution expressing vigorous support and unwavering commitment to the welfare, security, and survival of the State of Israel as a Jewish and democratic state with secure borders, and recognizing and strongly supporting its right to act in self-defense to protect its citizens against acts of terrorism. The resolution calls on Hamas to end its rocket and missile attacks against Israel, recognize Israel's right to exist, renounce violence, and agree to accept previous agreements between Israel and the Palestinians. It also encourages the President to continue to work diplomatically with the international community to prevent Hamas from retaining or rebuilding the capability to launch rockets and missiles against Israel. S.Res.599 passed the Senate with unanimous support.
Conserving Land and Water
Senator Nelson joined over 30 Senate colleagues in a letter of support for the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) and Forest Legacy program. Established in 1965, LWCF is a federal program that provides funds and matching grants to federal, state and local governments to acquire land and water or easements on land and water. LWCF emphasizes recreation and the protection of parks and protected forest and wildlife areas. Each year, 2.8 million outdoor sports enthusiasts and 4.2 million wildlife watchers combine to spend $8.1 billion on wildlife-associated recreation in Florida. Funding for LWCF comes from a portion of offshore oil and gas lease royalties. Florida has received approximately $908 million over the past four decades, protecting places such as the Big Cypress National Preserve and Biscayne National Park.
Helping Victims of Hurricane Sandy
Senator Nelson cosponsored a resolution permitting a Hurricane Sandy donation drive to be conducted in the U.S. Senate; the resolution passed by unanimous consent. A similar resolution was passed in 2005 to allow for donations to the Hurricane Katrina drive. The food donation drive will be managed by Feeding America, a hunger relief charity.
