The Florida Public Service Commission (PSC) will kick off its National Lifeline Awareness Week at 10:00AM Monday, September 13, 2010, at the Battery Park Community Center - 1 Bay Avenue - Apalachicola.
The purpose of National Lifeline Awareness Week, which runs from September 13 - 19, is to both raise awareness of and participation in “Link-Up and Lifeline Assistance” two federal/State programs that help make telephone service more affordable for qualified customers.
The Florida programs, “Link-Up Florida and Lifeline Assistance” are also designed to help those who need it most stay connected to important businesses, community organizations, and emergency services via telephone, which has fast become a critical tool for our senior population and for those who are trying to find employment.
Link-Up Florida gives a 50% rebate in the telephone hook-up charge (up to $30.00) and Lifeline Assistance gives a $13.50 credit per month on local phone bills.
However, many local residents may be eligible for the programs, due to circumstances surrounding the oil spill, but are not aware of them.
The goals are to heighten the Apalachicola Community’s awareness and to reach as many eligible customers as possible at the September 13 event.
Representatives from several area telephone companies will be on hand to assist with and process applications.
In addition, Commissioners from the Public Service Commission and J.R. Kelly, Public Counsel will be speaking at the event.
Area legislators and local elected officials have also been invited to participate.
Refreshments will be served!
