Apalachicola's 2010 Census Mail Participation Rate

With a 47% participation rate thus far, Apalachicola residents are doing fairly well returning back their 2010 U.S. Census forms. However, if everyone across the nation mailed theirs back, taxpayers could reduce the cost of taking the census by about $1.5 billion.

During the 2000 U.S. Census, Apalachicola's participation rate was 54%, well below the State of Florida's rate of 69% and the National rate of 72%. So far the nation as a whole just surpassed the 50% mark yesterday -- half the nation has returned their census form and the Census Bureau is challenging all communities to achieve a higher rate in 2010 than they did in 2000.

Nationally, the goal is to "beat" the 72% 2000 Census rate.

Census data help determine how more than $400 billion in Federal funds are distributed to state, and local communities each year. A complete count of Apalachicola in the census will help ensure that our community gets its fair share of census-based funding for the next ten years.
